In our family we exchange small gifts. Nothing expensive. I think the most costly was a crockpot, mainly because my son and his wife use one quite a bit and it was cracked and my wife was afraid it might finish breaking when it was cooking.

  2. This is actually a WONDERFUL idea and one we are also trying to put in place.

I do agree with you, it’s really the spirit of the season.

Our family started a new tradition last year. In lieu of gifts, we make donations to our favorite charities, or in honor of a loved one’s favorite charity. (Animal lovers like their donations made to the local animal shelter, for example, while another relative might prefer we write a check to the Salvation Army or the Michigan Heart Association.) Now that our country is in recession — and charities are hurting — this makes more sense than ever to me. I feel it more deeply reflects the true spirit of the holiday.
